Bree Wee held the lead for the majority of the race at IRONMAN Japan, but was on the wrong side of an epic comeback as Taiwan’s Shiao-Yu Li came from nearly 20 minutes behind off the bike to claim her third win at the event.
Wee used a 5:52:01 on the bike — the second best time of the day — to take over the lead.
But Li started to make up time in a hurry on the run. She put down a scorching time of 3:08:53 in the marathon, more than 30 minutes better than Wee.
Li finished in 10:22:59, and Wee came in close after at 10:33:59. Emi Sakai, of Japan, finished third.
“Wow that was challenging,” Wee told IRONMAN.com of the course. “Just crazy. But I want to come back to race next year.”
